The New Jersey National Guard Family Youth Support Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to empowering military-affiliated youth. We provide vital resources, leadership development opportunities, and community connection programs designed to address the unique challenges faced by children and teens in military families.
Through our initiatives, we strive to foster resilience, build confidence, and create a supportive network for these remarkable young individuals. Our mission is to ensure that every military-affiliated youth in New Jersey has the tools and support needed to thrive both personally and within their communities.
History
The New Jersey National Guard Youth Camp traces its origins back to July 1994, when the New Jersey National Guard Family Programs attended a workshop in Kentucky. Lynn Glazer, wife of Major General and Adjutant General of the New Jersey National Guard Paul Glazer, and Joanne Grieco participated in the workshop to gather insights on establishing a youth camp. Equipped with valuable information and resources, they briefed General Glazer on the concept of creating a youth camp for military-affiliated children.
In September 1994, a board of directors was formed to prepare for the camp’s launch. Joanne Grieco was appointed as the camp director, and key individuals were assigned to oversee critical sections such as safety and security, activities, medical, logistics, counselors, and administration. These leaders developed detailed plans that were reviewed and refined during monthly meetings held in Sea Girt, New Jersey. Their collaborative efforts ensured the camp’s foundation was strong and well-organized.
By the summer of 1995, preparations culminated in the inaugural youth camp held in August. The first camp welcomed 89 campers and 100 volunteers, setting the stage for a tradition that would flourish in the years to come. The camp was designed specifically for children whose parents, grandparents, aunts, or uncles were active or retired members of the New Jersey National Guard.
In the early 2000s, the original foundation overseeing the youth camp dissolved. However, in 2019, Al Curving reignited the mission by re-establishing the foundation with a renewed commitment to supporting military youth. The foundation faced challenges, including a necessary pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted organizations worldwide.
In recent years, the foundation has rebuilt itself with the same goals and vision that the original board held over 30 years ago: to fundraise and support programs dedicated to fostering growth in military youth. Today, the foundation continues to honor its legacy while adapting to modern needs, ensuring that the camp remains a beacon of hope, leadership, and connection for military families. Any and all support is greatly appreciated.
